Our recruit selection weekends (RSWs) take place monthly. Recruits undertake a series of tests to determine whether they are suitable to join the Royal Yeomanry. These are simple written and physical tests. To pass the RSW physical test, recruits need to be able to run a mile and a half in 14 minutes or less. After they have completed the tests, they are informed how they have performed and whether they have passed.
Each RSW has two aims. First and foremost, it is an opportunity for recruits to see whether they feel they would fit into the Royal Yeomanry and military life.
Secondly, it enables the Royal Yeomanry to judge whether each recruit has the potential to make it through the Recruits' Course - and to provide a chance for recruits to meet members of the Royal Yeomanry and HQ (Westminster Dragoons) Squadron.
Most who attend the weekend find it a challenging and enjoyable experience.
If successful, recruits are then invited to begin recruit training with the Royal Yeomanry. Whether or not any recruit takes up the offer is entirely up to them.
A general fitness training programme, which includes instructions on how to do the fitness test exercises in the proper way, is available here. We also have a set of downloadable booklets in our Library: click here.
