Glossary

Bounty - an annual tax free sum paid to members of the TA.

Capbadge - a unique metallic icon attached to a beret identifying the wearer to a specific unit or sub-unit.

CBRN - Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear.

CMS(R) - Common Military Syllabus (Recruits), the two-week course which is the culmination of recruit training.

CO - Commanding Officer, a regiment commander.

DPM - Disruptive Pattern Material, commonly known as camouflage.

Dragoon - Historically, a dragoon was a soldier trained to fight on foot, but transport himself on horseback. Click here to find out more.

Drill -
(1) activities, in particular marching, done to instill uniform behaviour and sense of working together as a group;
(2) to practise in performing a military task;
(3) a list of steps that must be done to perform a military task (for example, the "unmasking drill"- the procedure for removing a respirator.

Enlisted Soldier - a soldier who has joined the army who is not a commissioned officer.

FIBUA: fighting in built-up areas.

HGV - Heavy Goods Vehicle

MOD - Ministry of Defence

NBC - Nuclear Biological and Chemical defence.

NCO - Non Commissioned Officer: an enlisted soldier who has achieved the skills and qualifications required in order to lead other soldiers. The lowest rank of NCO is Lance Corporal.

OC - Officer Commanding, a squadron commander.

Officer - soldiers who have received a commission from the monarch to command troops.

Other Ranks - means the same thing as "enlisted men".

Rank - the position in the organisation that entitles the individual to specific authority.

Recruit - an individual in the process of becoming a fully trained soldier.

Regiment - an operational unit in the British Army. Usually 800 troops in an infantry unit and 400 troops in an armoured unit.

Royal Yeomanry: The Royal Yeomanry consists of five squadrons and a military band, each of which retains the separate identity of an old yeomanry regiment. The Westminster Dragoons are one of the five squadrons. Each squadron has a long and distinguished history, with all five having played key roles in World War 2 and Operation Telic in Iraq. RRTT - Regimental Recruit Training Team

RTC – the Recruit Training Centre, where pre-CMSR recruits carry out foundation military training over the course of between 4-6 weekends.

SA80 - the standard issue rifle of the British Army.

Skill at Arms - training and use of military firearms.

Squadron - a sub-unit of a cavalry regiment. The Westminster Dragoons are one of the five squadrons in the Royal Yeomanry regiment.

TA - Territorial Army

TAFS 1/RSW - Regimental Selection Weekend

TAFS 2/RTW - Recruit Training Weekend
