Joining as a Soldier

Getting There

After looking through this website you can contact a member of staff (see contact page here) or drop into the unit's building on a Wednesday night between 7.30 and 9.30. Simply follow the directions on the contact page to find out how to get there. It is best to telephone in advance so that someone will be looking out for you. If you decide to turn up on the spur of the moment, simply ask anyone in Army uniform to take you to the Westminster Dragoons' recruiting team.

Initial Interview

A member of the Regimental Recruit Training Team (RRTT) will have an informal interview with you. They will outline the roles of the regiment and squadron and the commitments expected of recruits and serving members. Among other things this will assess your basic aptitude, interests and education in order to identify that the TA is right for you.

The whole of the British Army, including the TA, is an equal opportunities employer. This is especially true of the WDs. Your enthusiasm and abilities are what matter, your background will not.

Forms

If successful at this stage you will be asked to take home a number of forms to complete in your own time. These will help with processing pay and the application process. At this stage proof of identity will be necessary such as a passport, driver's licence etc. Two character references will need to be provided by people of standing who know you well.

Medical

The regiment's medical officer will conduct an examination. This is to ascertain that you are able bodied enough to be trained to the higher levels of fitness required for military training.

Psychometric Test

Before being considered for entry to the WDs you will need to complete a basic psychometric test. Do not be put off by the name. It consists of 5 short tests in basic maths, spelling and mental agility. After which you will be informed how you have performed and whether you have passed.

Into the system

If your application is successful you will then be in the system and commence basic recruit training in areas such as Drill, Skill-at-Arms, CBRNand First Aid. This training will culminate in a two-week intensive course under regular Army instruction featuring an exercise in the field. Having overcome various challenges you will return to the unit as a fully trained serving soldier. For a detailed description of the recruit training programme, click here.
