1 Troop

Soldiers who complete recruit training and CMS(R) are, essentially, infantrymen (although not infantry specialists). The skill-set you will acquire during that process will come in useful throughout your military career. However, those skills are only the foundation on which much more needs to be built.

In order to be useful to the Squadron when on a field exercise, you need to possess a suite of specialist trades. Being able to switch roles from driver to signaller to rifleman makes it much more interesting for you, too.

The function of 1 Troop is to provide a fun and challenging continuation of your recruit training whilst at the same time ensuring that you complete the following courses. These will bring you up to the level of fit-for-role RAC crewman. Our aim is to get you to that level within as short a time as possible (preferably within nine months):

ks

  • Land Rover conversion (to enable those with private car driving licences to drive Land Rovers cross-country and in urban environments)

  • RAC Signals Phase 1 (to enable you to use the vehicle and manportable radios employed by the WDs)

  • NBC Soldier Parts A and B (to acquaint you with the intermediate level of CBRN awareness)

1 Troop is not a nursery. On most exercises, the troop is not vehicle-mounted and so the standard of fitness required is higher than in the rest of the squadron. Furthermore, you will be expected to achieve a standard of excellence which you will bring to the "sabre" troop you are posted to once you become fit-for-role.
