Career Courses

Once you come off the CMS(R) course, you are a trained soldier. But you are not a Yeoman, although you are paid as one. In order to make that grade - and so to be eligible to be promoted to LCpl - you must get the following trades:

  • NBC Soldier Parts A and B
  • Signals Phase 1
  • Land Rover Conversion
  • Map Reading Class 2
  • JNCO Cadre course

While a LCpl, you should get the following as soon as possible:

  • Driver Cat C
  • Defence Instructional Techniques
  • An instructor trade
  • Signals Phase 2

One of the best instructer trade courses open to soldiers of the WDs is Army Physical Training Instructor. Read about it by clicking here.

In addition to the above trades, a host of interesting options have become available due to our new role, including:

  • Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked) Driver
  • All-Arms Commando Course
  • Parachute Course
  • Combat Support Trooper

Junior officers normally undertake the following courses within their first two years of being commissioned (unless they have done so beforehand)

  • Signals Phase 1 and 2
  • NBC Soldier Parts A and B
  • Land Rover Conversion
  • CBRN Operational Adviser

Some of these courses are run in-house by the Westminster Dragoons. Others are taught by the London District Regional Training Centre (click here) and other parts of the TA, while the remainder we do alongside the regular Army and the RAF regiment.
